I am able to find the file you mention at:
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so

Apparently there's a debian bug report related to it as well:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=639106

I think if you either make a shortcut in the form of:
/bin/bash $(which cheese) LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
Or do some kind of linking so the program you're attempting can see this library.. You should be good. Let me know if I can help further.Shannon VanWagnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00902572387191538052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208479109120950856.post-19697152954964736252012-05-05T19:10:51.307-04:002012-05-05T19:10:51.307-04:00It doesn't works in my Ubuntu 12.04, neither w...It doesn't works in my Ubuntu 12.04, neither with cheese neither with skype (the shell says there isn't v4l1compat.so)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208479109120950856.post-26157121889017960362010-10-20T05:18:29.186-04:002010-10-20T05:18:29.186-04:00That WebCam works in Debian "Lenny" and ...That WebCam works in Debian "Lenny" and with all that WebCam Software. Also as a streaming Video Server und Apache if anybody wants too.No problems!Good Linux compatible Hardware!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8208479109120950856.post-75479915883053930352010-01-21T05:39:22.716-05:002010-01-21T05:39:22.716-05:00Hi Shannon, greetings from Italy.
