Thirty seconds after seeing that I have several TCP connections and everything seems to be working fine, Azilink gives me the following error message:
"The application Azilink (process org.lfx.azilink) has stopped unexpectedly."

Just downloaded the script and followed the directions, no go.
Thunderbolt with 2.3.4 and running Ubuntu 10.10. Azilink shows up as connected to host and I see the tun0 under my ifconfig but no internet access.

I tried using the new script to install over my old installation. It didn't work for me, so I deleted the folder with everything from the old script from my computer and ran the new script. Azilink has a new icon on my phone now, and connects again.

Thank you very much for this guide. I've almost got it working. Everything seems to go perfectly ("Initialization Sequence Completed", like some other commenters), but no Internet connection. Azilink says it's connected, but stops after receiving ~500 bytes (and usually 0 TCP connections) when trying google.com. It went up to ~1000 once or twice with one (or more ?) TCP connections, and may have loaded the page, without the google image. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and DroidX. Any thoughts? I just did some Update Manager stuff, so I'll try again, who knows? :)

Posting this while tethered on my Ubuntu 11.04 natty netbook with a Samsung Android 2.2.1 phone. I had a bit of trouble getting started until I realized that when you connect the phone via USB, be sure to mount it as a disk drive. I'm not sure if this happens automatically on other phones but on mine, it doesn't. On my phone, a notification comes up & you have to hit the USB storage button. From there, I was able to use lsusb to determine the proper value for idVendor and go from there.

Anyway, I used the python script to get everything up & running and it all works great. Couldn't have been easier. Thanks!

@Glenn, the only changes to your phone that are made as a result of this article are:
1.) You enable USB debugging on the phone
2.) azilink gets installed as an application on the phone
If you want to reverse those changes, simply do so by uninstalling the azilink application and turning off usb debugging.

I finally got it working on my HTC Droid Eris and Ubuntu 11.04

What finally solved it for me was modifying 91-android.rules

Instead of the following:
SUBSYSTEM==”usb”, ATTRS{idVendor}==”0bb4″, MODE=”0666″, OWNER=”chill”

I changed it to the following:
SUBSYSTEM==”usb”, ATTRS{idVendor}==”0bb4″, ATTRS{idProduct}==”0c98″,
MODE=”0666″, OWNER=”chill”

The value for ATTRS{idProduct} can be found by doing the following command in your terminal:
lsusb

Which should return something like the following:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bb4:0c98 High Tech Computer Corp.

If you note the location of "0c98" you should be able to figure out the value for your specific phone as well.

Hope this helps anyone who is still having problems getting this to work!

so in your 91-android.rules, does OWNER="USERNAME"= OWNER="-your logged in username-" ?

Also, if you have installed any other tethering solutions, I've seen those cause problems for this method.

Finally, what is the output from lsusb (showing the line that identifies your phone)?

Basically your problem is with getting the computer to see the phone.. This would also be a problem if you were trying to do android development with the phone so I'm thinking there must be a way to get it working...

I have followed all the steps and everything works well (at last) apart from the fact that, when typing "adb devices", "??????? no permissions" appears (though I have done all the requirements). So I have tried with the "python script" just in case it works, and it says that "it seems that my phone doesn`t appear to be connected, enable USB debugging". BUT, I have already enabled it on my phone, and also activate de azilink service. So it seems that it is a problem of my phone. I have a Sonny Ericsson X10 mini pro, Linux v. 10.04 and I have created the document "91-android.rules" as:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0fce", SYMLINK+="android_adb", MODE="0666", OWNER="USERNAME"

Hi... I'm getting connected fine. AziLink says that it is connected to the host but all of the counters are not moving and I am unable to get to the web. I disabled networking and the 'start_modem' seems to show that the initialization was successful... I tried playing with the proxy a little bit but put it back and it still isn't working... any ideas?

Excellent post, thank you! Worked in one try on my Fedora13 eeePC connecting to my AT&T branded Motorola Bravo running android 2.1. idVendor=22b8 (as posted) is the correct id for the device.

One note, the Android SDK Platform-tools in step 2 is now at revision 2. It still worked fine.

Thank you Shannon! Worked for me first time on Ubuntu 10.10. I had bought a Droid 2 thinking that the wifi hotspot feature was included in the bill. Sneaky marketing - it wasn't. So, I was relieved to learn that one can tether a phone. I tried a few other techniques, but this one just worked without hassle. Awesome.
